Cox strengthens its presence in Guatemala with one of the country’s largest solar parks

  • The project has an installed capacity of 75.2 MWp, ranking among the largest solar complexes in the country.
  • The plant will generate 167,600 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to supply approximately 200,000 households.
  • CIFI, BICSA and Banco Aliado are supporting the development of this strategic infrastructure project for Guatemala.
  • The initiative strengthens Cox’s strategy as an international group specializing in critical water and energy infrastructure and consolidates its growth in Latin America

Madrid, September 24, 2026.  Cox, an international group specializing in critical water and energy infrastructure, continues to advance its growth strategy in Central America with the development of the Chiquimulilla photovoltaic solar project, an infrastructure initiative that will contribute to strengthening Guatemala’s renewable energy mix and expanding the country’s clean power generation capacity. The project has an installed capacity of 75.2 MWp, ranking among the largest solar complexes in the Guatemalan market.

Cox has reached an agreement to finance the project with a pool of financial institutions led by CIFI, which is acting as arranger and lead syndication agent and is participating with its own resources, together with the Sustainable Infrastructure Debt Fund (SIDF), managed by CIFI Asset Management, BICSA and Banco Aliado as lenders. Banco Aliado is also acting as facility agent and administrative agent for payments under the facility.

Located in the municipality of Chiquimulilla, in the department of Santa Rosa, one of the areas with the highest solar irradiation levels in Guatemala, the project takes advantage of the region’s natural conditions to promote more sustainable, competitive and resilient power generation.

The project is structured in two phases and has 15-year power purchase agreements with Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala (EEGSA) and Distribuidora de Electricidad de Occidente (DEOCSA), previously awarded through the PEG4 tender process. These agreements provide financial stability and support the integration of renewable energy into the national electricity system.

The development of this infrastructure marks another milestone in Cox’s strategy in Latin America, a region offering significant growth opportunities in key sectors for the energy transition. The company continues to strengthen its presence in high-potential markets through projects that combine sustainability, operational efficiency and long-term value creation.

“The Chiquimulilla project reflects our ability to identify, develop and execute strategic infrastructure projects that respond to the energy needs of the markets in which we operate. Guatemala has significant potential for renewable generation, and this photovoltaic project will help accelerate the country’s energy transition while further strengthening our position in Central America,” said Luis Manresa, Director of Business Development – Energy for Cox’s Central Arc (Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia and Ecuador).

Once operational, the facility will generate approximately 167,600 MWh of renewable electricity per year, enough energy to supply around 200,000 households. It will also avoid approximately 19,600 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually, contributing to decarbonization efforts and the achievement of the country’s climate objectives.

“With Chiquimulilla, Cox continues to expand its portfolio of energy assets in the region and reaffirms its commitment to developing essential infrastructure that contributes to access to clean energy, strengthens energy security and supports the sustainable growth of the countries in which it operates,” said Martín Sucre Champsaur, Regional Manager for Cox’s Central Arc.
