Cox awarded 248MWp of renewable energy in Seville by Lightsource bp

    • The project involves five photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 248 MWp, as well as a power transmission project in the Seville towns of Guillena, Burguillos and Alcalá del Río.
    • The energy division will oversee the project, which includes engineering and procurement services, as well as operation and maintenance.
    • With this project, Cox continues to increase its service portfolio, which exceeded 1.55 billion euros in July 2024.
    • The facility will create more than 350 direct and indirect jobs during the entire process.
    • The energy generated will supply some 132,000 homes and avoid the emission of more than 77,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Madrid, October 16, 2024.  Cox, a global water and energy utility that applies technologically innovative solutions for sustainable development, has been awarded by Lightsource bp, five photovoltaic plants with a total capacity of 248 MWp in the north of Seville, specifically in the towns of Guillena, Burguillos and Alcalá del Río, as well as an electricity transmission network in the towns. The project will create some 350 direct and indirect jobs during the construction period.

The photovoltaic plants will be organized in two different voltages: on the one hand, Gerena 1, Gerena 2 and Gerena 3, connected to a voltage of 220 kV and, on the other hand, Guillena 1 and Guillena 2, which will inject their production through 400 kV connections. The transmission project includes the construction and commissioning of the Burguillos 220/33 kV electrical substation, three overhead transmission lines and two position bays.

Thanks to its experience and capabilities, Cox will carry out, through its energy division, the engineering and procurement tasks of the five photovoltaic plants and the transmission project, as well as its operation and maintenance for two years. The project has been awarded to Cox by Lightsource bp, a world leader in the development, financing, construction and management of solar energy projects.

The project, which is expected to be operational in 2026, will be able to generate 515,000 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to supply the equivalent of approximately 132,000 homes. This renewable electricity generation will help avoid the emission of about 77,000 tons of CO2 each year, which is equivalent to taking more than 60,000 cars off the road.

“We are very pleased with this operation that reinforces our leadership in the energy sector – says Enrique Riquelme, Executive Chairman of Cox – We have a great experience and important national and international presence in the sector, which together with our first level capabilities in engineering contribute in a fundamental way to reinforce our leadership position globally and consolidates us as a strategic partner”.

This award is a sign of the confidence that the market has in Cox and adds to the more than 3.6 GW that the company has in operation, construction and development globally. It also reinforces its commitment to the Andalusian community, to which it belongs and which it wants to continue to promote through local projects and employment generation for the region.

Cox’s energy division integrates both generation and transmission, covering all phases of the value chain: from project development to commissioning, being a pioneer and an operator of recognized technological prestige in the industry.

Cox has an extensive track record in the development and operation of renewable energy projects worldwide. The Company uses different technologies (always renewable) including solar PV, BESS storage, combined cycle and ISCC plants, solar thermal and bioenergy plants. It currently has six generation plants in operation and two transmission line concessions (recently awarded in 2024).
